I've found that frequent touch-ups on the grinder work better than less frequent hard grindings. Also, the grinder gives a good burr to scrapers or the edge of bowl gouges used inverted for skew-scraping. One thing I WOULD like to add is a pair of good-quality adjustable tool rests that can be set up and left for things like bowl scrapers.

1x42in Viel Sander/Grinder. Thoughts as a beginners ...

I found this Viel knife grinder/sander at Lee Valley Tools, it is a 1/4hp - 1/2hp 1x42, 2-wheel setup, and I would like some feedback / thoughts. It is extremely simple, with the drive wheel connecting directly to the driveshaft of the motor, and the upper wheel being spring-loaded to keep tension on the belt.

Grinding using Bench Stones - Brent Beach

I read Leonard Lee's sharpening book and the Lee Valley catalogues. From them I decided to try a 1" belt sander to replace the grinder. The tool rest on the 1" Delta belt sander cannot be used when grinding at the angles required for plane blades and chisels, so I bent a bit of angle iron to make a new tool rest for the belt sander.

I now have a 1" strip sander that I use for a lot of sharpening, both knives, scissors, and yea some turning tools. Works much better than the small belt sander and it's much quicker to change belts. The one I got is from Lee Valley and you have to add the motor and switch. Went from those to my old Craftsman 6" 3450 rpm grinder with a gray wheel.
